Purpose and Fear

Do you know why roller coasters do not have individual brakes for each rider?

Because they know we would apply them! Almost immediately actually. We know in advance the ride is going to be scary. We are (somewhat) comfortable with our decision to take the ride because we boarded the roller coaster of our own free will. Yet, if they gave us the ability to brake, many of us absolutely would.

Have you ever seen anyone exit a roller coaster after the ride? They are usually smiling and laughing with a look of exhilaration. The journey was scary but fun. They were forced to go through the scary parts with no brakes.

Life is so similar to the roller coaster, but unfortunately, we have a brake. Some of us never take our foot off the brake. Some of us stop and start repeatedly so we aren’t getting very far. Is your foot on the brake? You cannot progress if it is and you certainly won’t have any fun. Imagine what would change if you took your foot off the brake! Wow!
