Friday’s Quote

“You cannot pour from an empty cup.” Unknown

This quote is often followed by, “Take care of yourself first.” Right about now, mid-August every year, is usually when I hit the wall. The kids have been home all summer, my house has been sufficiently trashed, and I am craving some semblance of order that I clearly remember having back in May.

Maybe it’s because I mistakenly view summer as this long-awaited free time when I will accomplish everything that I was unable to accomplish during the other 9 months of the year. I should have learned by now that that perception of summer is misguided at best and, by mid-August, care-free Beth has slowly morphed into frustrated Beth. Or is it that deep down my subconscious knows I don’t want summer to end?

Either way, mid-August is when my cup is empty. Yesterday I cashed in on a gift certificate that was given to me for Mother’s Day and I enjoyed the most relaxing facial. The timing was perfect; it filled my empty cup. I knew I was pouring from an empty cup. What about you? Is your cup empty? Will you carve out an hour of self-indulgence or will you continue to serve from an empty vessel?

“An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly.” Unknown
