The Touchdown Dance

The other day I was watching a football game when the tight end made an extraordinary catch before falling out of bounds. As he got up, he tossed the ball to the ref, and ran back to the huddle. I was so happy to see this! I am not a fan of all the celebrations that take place after each good play! Honestly, it’s your job! Just get back to the huddle and do it again. There are people on the field that are paid to announce, “first down,” we don’t need you pointing the way. Do I sound a little disgruntled? I defintiely was, until now.

I grew up with a father who didn’t allow us to toot our own horn. He’s the one who taught me, through sports, that “it’s your job, so get it done.” But as I watched this football game, I thought, “So did I learn to NEVER celebrate the successes? I know that never and always are not healthy words. Maybe these crazy football players know something I don’t. I still don’t believe that every play needs to be celebrated, but they made me see how joyful celebrating can be! And that not celebrating is wrong, too!

Humble comes from the Latin word “humus” or earth/on the ground/lowly. I like humble a lot, but I do hope all of us are celebrating, too! Maybe it’s in the privacy of our own homes. Celebrating is joyful and fun—we need a lot more of that! I know your doing a great, kick-a** job, so take a moment to celebrate! Create your own touchdown dance! Humble is about being with the earth, but sometimes we need to be with the sky! Take a moment to celebrate your successes and those around you—we really need this!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
