A Great Team

I was on a great call yesterday when one of the leaders said, “A great team isn’t a group of people who do the same thing, it’s a group of people who want the same thing.” I love, love, love this. The two key words here are: great and want.

As a leader, who doesn’t want a great team? Actually, maybe it’s only the great leaders, or those who aspire to be great leaders, who want great teams. So how do we get our team to all want the same thing? The truth is that self-interest is the most fundamental human motivation—it’s our built in survival mechanism. However, a rising tide lifts all boats!

I don’t have the “want” answer for your team today, but it’s certainly a discussion worth having with your team. “What do we all want?” If you’ve never asked them, now is the time. Do we want money, accolades, a promotion, to help others, to make a difference, to grow and improve, or something else? Ask. You won’t know until you do. The answers might surprise you. See if you can all agree on one fantastic want!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
