Friday’s Quote

“No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” ~ Heraclitus (Greek philosopher)

I was looking at an old picture of my son yesterday. He was probably about 8 years old and he was on the beach in Sea Isle, NJ. A few feet away from the picture, in my family room, was himself—a 22-year-old grown man. I smiled as I thought to myself, he’s not even the same person.

Heraclitus was wise in his words, we don’t ever step in the same river twice. We aren’t even the same person we were yesterday. Think of something that happened yesterday that made you a different person today. Is it something you learned or an event that happened, or a relationship that changed. Every day we change and grow; some of that is planned and some of it is not, but nonetheless it happens.

Now, we just have to let our mind know because, for some strange reason, our mind thinks we are the same person every day. Maybe we should speak Heraclitus’ words to ourselves daily, “It’s not the same river and I am not the same man!” This Greek philosopher didn’t add this, but I will, “We are not the same person because we are stronger, smarter, more experienced, more persistent, grittier, more patient, more strategic, etc.” Over time we have become a bada## and it’s about time we noticed! Let’s go—new river, new you!

With Gratitude,

Beth
