Friday’s Quote

“Confidence is when you believe in yourself and your abilities; arrogance is when you think you are better than others and act accordingly.” Stewart Stafford

Both sides of this confidence thing can be very unattractive—when we have too much and when we don’t have enough. Where do you fall on the confidence scale? Does it ebb and flow like the tide depending on the company you keep? Have you thought about how your confidence makes other people feel? Is it seen as confidence or is it seen as arrogance?

“Confidence comes not from always being right, but from not fearing to be wrong.” Peter T. McIntyre

Have you been in a situation at work or otherwise where you were afraid to speak up because you didn’t want to look like you didn’t know the answer? Me, too. Have you also been in a room where someone very senior wasn’t afraid to say, “I don’t understand, can you explain?” Me, too. That is such a beautiful confidence.

“Self-confidence isn’t pride, but believing you can be better than you were yesterday.” Unknown

Give your self-confidence some thought today. I want all of us to be more confident, but I also want us to be aware of how our confidence is perceived. Pride and arrogance is not a good look on anyone. If you’re a leader, that will repulse your people. Pride and arrogance come with a bravado that endears no one. Be yourself. Be genuine. Be real. Because the truth is, you’re fooling no one.
