Friday’s Quote

“Without effort, you cannot be prosperous. Though the land be good, you cannot have an abundant crop without cultivation.” ~ Plato

In my role as coach, everyone that comes to me does so because they are unhappy in some way. They want more, they want better, or they want different, but what they don’t want is the same. And they have likely reached a breaking point with their current situation and want some help, so this is almost always our starting point. Fair enough.

What is also true about every client, is that the “land” they have to cultivate is always fertile soil—although they often don’t believe that to be true at first. They often believe others have been gifted with fertile ground and they’ve been burdened with a barren wasteland. The truth is, all of us have been gifted with rich, fertile land, but it is up to us to decide how we will cultivate this precious gift.

So Plato boldly stated, “Without effort, you cannot be prosperous,” and that is as true today as it was when he said it in the 4th century BC. If we are looking for more, better, or different, we have to stop looking for “better land”; the land isn’t the problem. We have rich, fertile soil right where we are. If we want “an abundant crop,” we have to focus on actively cultivating the land we have. Complaining about our land isn’t helping because the land isn’t the problem; the problem lies with the farmer. And the good news is—we don’t have to wait for richer soil anymore, we can start farming right now! Let’s GO! We got this!

With Gratitude,
Beth
