Metrics Matter

Can you imagine how a company would operate if it didn’t use metrics? Gasp! “How would we know how we are doing?” We use metrics to measure productivity, growth, and success — or lack thereof. ForbesInc. MagazineFast Company, etc. all weigh in regularly on the various metrics we should be focusing on. My favorite: what does your parking lot look like a half-hour after closing time.

Corporations could not function without metrics, but more often than not we do. Do you have performance metrics for yourself? What is your growth number for 2019? How will you measure success in the 3rd quarter or year-end? Don’t think only about your career, add your health, your relationships, and your finances. Peter Drucker may have said it best, “What gets measured, gets managed.”

If you don’t have metrics for yourself, consider creating them. If corporations wouldn’t work without them, then why should we? Bertrand Duperrin’s Notepad is quoted as saying “Tell me how you measure me, and I will tell you how I will behave.” It’s human nature to work toward expectations, so why not set expectations for ourselves?

With Gratitude,
Beth
