Pitching at Yankee Stadium

Last night the New York Yankees sent a very young Adonis Rosa to the mound. He’s a 24-year-old young man from the Dominican Republic who has played at both Yankee farm teams, Scranton and Trenton. As I watched him come off the field after his first major league start, I couldn’t help but be happy for him! His dream came true last night.

For Rosa and many other young athletes like him the target is clear: MLB (Major League Baseball). Everything is done toward that end. But what if your goal isn’t to be a professional athlete? What then? ‘Professional athlete’ is a crystal clear goal and you know for sure whether or not you have achieved it. Knowing the target makes us laser-focused.

For the rest of us that don’t want to be a professional athlete, we need to find a way to get as clear as these athletes about our target. Answer these questions: What do I want? Do I know the job? Do I know the industry? Do I know the salary? Do I know the location? It’s not easy to hit a moving target and it’s impossible to hit an unknown one. Your target might not be, “I want to pitch for the Yankees” but you need a target. Rosa hit his target at 24 years old. That’s impressive. I’ll bet that knowing the target made all the difference.

With Gratitude,
Beth
