The Art of Hygge

Have you ever heard of the Danish word hygge? It is a Danish word that defies literal translation but keeps popping up in my life from meditation to candles so I thought I would share. By the way, it is pronounced “hue-gah”.

Hygge is more often than not linked to the word coziness, but it goes much deeper than that. It is a little bit like peering into the Danish soul. The Danes know how to decouple wealth and well being—and they are really good at focusing on what brings them a better quality of life. We can’t argue with the facts, they are the happiest workforce in the world.

How can we incorporate some hygge into our life? First, lighten up for goodness sake! Light a few candles and put on some cozy socks. Don’t stay late at work. Invite over the people you love – family and friends – soaking up that priceless time. Life is short. We all need a big dose of hygge in our life. Start now, tomorrow is too late.

With Gratitude,
Beth
