Show Me Your Desk

As the year comes to a close, I hope you are beginning to think about next year. 2022 is quickly approaching and I want it to be a great year for you and me! Like Christmas, I want you to get everything you asked for and more. Do you know what you want in 2022? Have you given it any thought? It’s ok if you haven’t, but maybe you can start now.

Clients will often tell me what they want. You might know what you want, too. But I learned a long time ago, from Paul Martinelli, to never accept that at face value. Paul used to say, “Show me your desk!” What Paul wanted to see was proof that you were working toward your goal. Look at your desk now—are there signs? What books are you reading, what podcasts are you listening to, what blogs are you reading? There should be signs of what you really want present on your desk somewhere. And if there aren’t, that’s telling.

Before 2022 gets here, I hope you’ll give some thought to what you want. Once you know what you want, then you can ask, “How am I going to get there?” Plugging along and working hard isn’t how you get to your destination of choice—it is how you get tired. Carve out some time in the next few days to answer these questions. I will, too. Think like a great coach in the NFL or NBA—do you think they start a season by sharing a vision like this, “Look, I think if we work hard and do our best, we will probably have a great season!”

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
