Who and Why

I have about had it with (some) college professors! And I believe my thoughts are valid having sent four kids off to college (14 years of professor stories and counting)—and my sister is a college professor btw, but she’s not part of my “some”. I can’t even share all of my stories here, but let’s suffice it to say that I believe these said professors are mean, myopic, egotistical, megalomaniacal, and they have lost sight of the purpose of teaching. To teach is to impart new knowledge and a deeper interest in a subject, as well as to help students learn what fires their passion. And maybe it’s the students who lie and cheat that have tainted the professors, but who’s the leader here?

Sometimes we all lose sight of who we work for and why. Who do you work for? Nobody works for a company, we all work for people. Somehow it all boils down to the people. And why do we work for them? I don’t know if you’ll take the time to answer these two questions, but I can assure you my “some” college professors have not—and they should.

When we know WHO we work for and WHY we do it, we can be better at what we do. Amazing, actually! Work isn’t about profit or the bottom line, that’s an outcome of us impacting all of those around us in such a way that we have great people doing great work that deliver great results. The power-trip serves no one, especially not the young adults who are trying to figure out what they want to do with their life. If you’re a leader, who you serve should be seen as a precious and dear responsibility that you have been fortunate enough to have been entrusted with—so please treat it as such.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
