Good To Great

Last night I had the privilege of speaking with the women of Covenant House New Jersey. I’m not tossing the word “privilege” around carelessly, as these women and this organization do amazing work for young people who are in crisis. They are open 24-7 safeguarding children who are homeless. Children and homeless shouldn’t be in the same sentence.

The purpose of my talk was to inspire. The pandemic has taken the wind out of many of our sails. I brought up a book that was published over 20 years ago now, Good To Great by Jim Collins. In this book, Collins states, “Good is the enemy of great.” Yes! We get to good, and we leave great on the table. Maybe we even get to really good, but what about great?

Today, take a look at one of your relationships—maybe the one that is most important to you. Is it good? How can it be great? Do the same for a work relationship. Is it good? How can it be great? I used the example of my husband who said, “I forgot to text my mom today.” I instantly thought, ‘What? NO!’ I looked at him and said, “Call her! Every chance you get, pick up the phone and call her— that choice is no longer available to me with my mom, but I wish it was.” Look at everything. Is it good? How can it be great?

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
