A Broken Spirit

The other day, while I was traveling in the car listening to the radio, I heard an author, John Vercher, read from his recently published book, After The Lights Go Out. There was one sentence that captured my attention: ‘Break the spirit, and the body follows fast behind.’ Haven’t we all felt our spirit break?

Maybe you, like I, have noticed professional athletes looking defeated before they actually were—we can see it on their faces. And I believe this goes well beyond physical defeat, I believe it’s indicative of mental defeat as well. “Break the spirit, and the body follows fast behind” — we could all benefit from a better understanding of this timeless nugget of wisdom.

Where do you feel like your spirit has been broken a bit. I know I have a few thoughts of my own. Can we revisit this thought? Can we reignite the flame? Do we need some support to get our spirit back in the fight? Mental toughness is not a gift we are born with, we have to develop it through practice. We can remain with our broken spirit or we can intentionally fight back. What do you want to do?
