Yesterday I had the pleasure of going into New York City to see a Broadway Show, & Juliet, with a bunch of friends. The show is great, btw, but I was fascinated by the female lead, Lorna Courtney, who looked about 20 years old! She’s actually 24, but can you imagine getting the lead in a Broadway show at the age of 24? No, me either, so I did a little digging to find out more. 

Glamour wrote an article about her. They discussed pivotal life moments that often determine who we are. Anyone who’s lived a little knows that no matter what course your life is on, everything can change in an instant. She’s from Jamaica Queens and she said, “Where you go to school basically determines your destiny.” No pressure there, right? She decided to apply to LaGuardia High School in Manhattan so she could study voice. By good fortune, she was accepted—pivot. And it wasn’t easy as she had a daily hour and a half commute that required her to take a bus and three subways because the train was too expensive, but she knew how important the pivot would be. 10 years later, she’s starring on Broadway. 

What was your life pivot? Was there a life-changing event that changed the trajectory of where you were headed and where you ended up? That’s the past though, so what about the future? Do you and I need to think about another pivot? Do we like where things are headed or do we need a change? I’m all for the pivot! Remember this: LaGuardia High School of Music & Art didn’t reach out Courtney, she applied. She made the pivot happen and so can we! No one is coming get us, we need to go get it!
