It’s More Than Sleep

I was really blown away recently when I read an article in The Cut about sleeping pills. The article was about the book Why We Sleep by Matt Walker, a professor of neuroscience and psychology at UC Berkeley, and it shared some unfortunate truths about sleeping pills.

The research suggests that the drugs don’t tend to increase sleep quality beyond placebos. You can read the article (below) for all the incredibly interesting details, but for me, who has zero issues with sleep, I was captured by the placebo. Again we have a placebo that is highly effective in providing the desired result! Arguably, it’s a better result in that “placebo sleep” would have no after-effects.

The mind is inordinately powerful! If it can overcome insomnia, then I wish I could make placebos for so many other things like fear, low self-esteem, confidence, limiting beliefs, rejection, failure, negative self-talk, and oh yeah – cancer! I’ve written about placebos before. Today, please ask yourself “Why do they work?”

With Gratitude,
Beth
