DO NOT BACK UP

At my new apartment, I park in a parking deck. It’s three stories high with lots of barrier gates and access locations to “tap in,” as well as this scary nail tread to prevent cars from backing up. I always marvel at a sign like this—why do they not want me to back up so much that they will ruin my tires if I do? It seems egregious for a parking deck.

But, of course, this sign made me think of you and me. Maybe we should have that sign posted somewhere in our home or office. It’s not so much the blatant, “do not back up” that’s important as it is the implied, “please continue moving forward,” that I like so much. Every time I see this sign and I see the frightening metal claws on this tread, I dutifully follow the instructions and continue to move forward so that my tires stay intact, and then exhale a sigh of relief when the danger is gone. All this for a parking deck.

I want this sign to appear in our minds-eye every time we hesitate to move forward with our life—personally or professionally! What if not moving forward did cause, “severe tire damage,” to our life? When our tire goes flat, we can’t move forward, we get stuck exactly where we are until someone can come to help get us get moving again. Let’s get the sign posted: CAUTION! DO NOT BACK UP! What great advice!!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
