Motivational Monday!

Prior to January 1st, I made a commitment/goal to go to yoga every Friday, unless I was out of town—and I have honored that commitment. I have wanted to have a yoga practice for a long time now. I know yoga is good for me. This particular yoga is in my building, so the “commute” is hard to argue. The instructor is so lovely. There are only a few of us in the class, so it’s never crowded. But here’s the truth: I don’t love it. And every week, I kind of don’t want to go, there’s always something I’d rather do. So this got me thinking.

I asked myself, “Why don’t you like it?” I think it’s the space. My old yoga studio, Honor Yoga, was warm and inviting. There was a fireplace, candles illuminated the space instead of florescent overhead lighting, and they had linen curtains to conceal that we were really in a strip mall. We felt like we were in a spa—sort of. My new space is a converted gym, but it shouldn’t matter, I’m there to do yoga. And I could go to a different yoga studio, and I may, but the convenience is hard to resist, and it’s helping me keep my commitment/goal.

So here’s the truth: every Friday morning without fail, I say, “I’m leaving for yoga,” yet almost no part of me wants to go. I go anyway because I made a commitment to myself. I’ve told myself, it’s not negotiable—if it’s Friday, AND I’m home, I go to yoga. I don’t tell myself how Honor Yoga had a better space, or that I can take this week off. Nope, it’s not an option. I say this instead, “Yoga’s good for me, so grab your stuff and go.” Today, take a look at something where you have been letting yourself off the hook. We need to exercise this muscle. Remember, Tuesday I go to Shop Rite and Friday I go to yoga—I never ask myself if I want to because I know the answer. But at 10 am on both of those day, I am PSYCHED that I completed the work. I’m glad I didn’t let myself off the hook.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
