“Do you want to do this thing? Sit down and do it.” ~ Ann Patchett
Well one doesn’t get much more blunt than that, huh? I hear a lot of people, myself included, speak of what they want as well as what they don’t want. More often than not, the answer is simply, “sit down and do it.” You’re probably wondering, “It cant be that simple?” although many times it is!
Let’s try out Patchett’s advice. Let’s say, “We want more money!” Who doesn’t? OK, “Do you want to do this thing? Sit down and do it.” Does that mean search for a new job? Does it mean a side-hustle? How could we earn more money? We have to be willing to do the work and stop complaining about our lack of money? What if our complaint is, “I’m not happy.” OK, “Do you want to do this thing? Sit down and do it.” What makes us happy? Do more of that. And what makes us unhappy? Stop doing that. I know this may sound Pollyanaish, but it’s not.
We tend to get caught up in our own story and forget we are, in fact, in the driver’s seat at all times. As our parents used to say, “No one is going to hand it to you, you’re going to have to work for it.” We can keep complaining about this thing, or we can ask ourselves, “Do I want this thing?” If the answer is, “Yes,” then we need to take Patchett’s advise and sit down and do it!
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
