The Wisdom of Alan

I was talking with my friend, Alan, yesterday. Alan works in my building, so we get to see him often, and he always has something fun to chat or laugh about. Last night, I asked him if he was O.K. because he didn’t seem his usual jovial self. Immediately, a single-sided playful grin began to emerge on his face, so I knew something good was being processed for delivery!

After a brief moment, Alan said, “If I have a problem, but I know the solution, then I don’t really have a problem at all.” Wow! Isn’t that the truth? And how many of us currently think we have a problem, YET we know the solution, so do we really have a problem? Let’s use real life scenarios. What is your current problem that you’d like solved? I’ll ask myself the same question, but we really have to say our answer out loud. Do you have your problem selected? Good, me, too.

On to Step 2, what is the solution? I know this sounds simple, or maybe even naive, but sometimes it’s really that easy. Alan just called us all out on it—if you have a problem and you know the solution, then it’s not a problem. If, after thinking about the solution you find yourself saying, “Yes, but…,” try to stop yourself. “But,” is the part of us that wants to let us off the hook. Alan never said it was going to be easy or cheap. If we already know the solution, then why aren’t we fixing the problem? Take a minute to answer that question with some paper and a pen. What you write will blow you away.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
