Chin Up, Chest Out

If you were a stock, would you be “up” or “down” right now? This is not a question for you or me to reflect upon about our current emotional state, this is more about our value. I know it’s a weird question, especially if you don’t follow stocks, but stay with me. Do you know your value?

According to conventional wisdom, “Everyone is replaceable,” but is this true or simply a very dangerous business cliche’ that we have unfortunately held as our belief? By believing this to be true, we tend to play it safe and we ask for very little— if anything —for fear of overstepping our bounds or making unreasonable demands. We don’t see or acknowledge our value. “Everyone is replaceable,” is a ball and chain holding us in place and forcing us to overlook our worth. So I’ll ask us again, “If you were a stock, would you be “up” or “down” right now?”

The cliche’ should be changed to this—”Everyone is replaceable—at a cost.” The cost of replacing an individual employee can range from 1.5-2 times the employee’s annual salary and add to the mix a highly competitive and tight labour market. Today, regardless of your current situation, I want all of us to KNOW OUR VALUE. Talented employees should entertain finally speaking up, asking for what’s rightfully theirs, especially if they’ve been contributing to the company’s success for years. If you haven’t ever given any real thought to your value, today is the day. Chin up, chest out!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
