I was reading a really great story yesterday about Sheryl Sandberg. She had given a speech to about 100 Facebook employees and a little while afterword, there was a woman who had attended the speech, who waited outside Sandberg’s office so she could chat with her.
The woman said, “I learned something today. I learned that I need to keep my hand up.” Sandberg said, “What do you mean?” She said, “Well, you’re giving this talk, and you said you were going to take two more questions. And I had my hand up with lots of other people, and you took two more questions. And I put my hand down, and I noticed all the women put their hand down, and then you took more questions, only from the men.” Hmm. WOW!
O.K. everyone, what did you just learn? First, the lesson has nothing to do whether you are a man or a woman. Second, persistence can and will often pay off. Third, following the rules isn’t always our best choice, and finally, and perhaps most important, is that reaching for opportunities and making them happen rests almost entirely on us to ACT as the catalyst. So what’s your next move?
Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
