Are You Lucky?

Have you ever said this about your current job, “I’m so lucky to have this job”? And did you say this not because you absolutely loved your job, but because it was safe, you were paid well, it was close to home, they gave you flexibility, etc… There are probably a myriad of other reasons, too, that you decided to feel “lucky” to have this job, but if you don’t love the job, are you really lucky?

People stay at jobs they don’t love and describe themselves as “lucky” all the time because they are afraid. The safe bet causes us no fear—and the brain [and body] loves this! And when we start to use the word “lucky” we begin to trick our brain, unintentionally, of course, to think we actually are lucky—but are we?

Today, if you have ever said, “I’m so lucky to have this job,” I would like you to ask yourself a few questions. First, are you really “lucky” to have a job you don’t love? Second, what is a better word to use than “lucky?” Maybe you’re simply glad that you have this job. Maybe the company should be lucky to have you? Maybe just switching the sentence around and allowing the brain to absorb a much better truth, like “this company is lucky to have me,” will change your inner dialogue. Look, I’m glad you have the job, too, but don’t ever say, “I’m lucky” to have a job you don’t like. reserve the word “lucky” for when you really mean it!
