The other day I was talking to a friend, who also happens to have been a client periodically. He’s going through a work transition as well as a move and was asking what I thought. Before I was able share my two cents, he told me all the conflicting information he was hearing from those around him. You all know the advice we get when we ask, “Do this,” “Don’t do that,” “You’re crazy,” “What if…,” etc. And ALL of it is well-intentioned, but not necessarily helpful.

When it was my turn, I told my friend, “Go live the dream!” I went on to say that if you find out it’s not where you want to live, then move. If it’s not the job of your dreams, then find a new job or quit or retire. As we get older, that’s the question that gets asked a lot, “When are you going to retire?” My answer is, “Very possibly, never.” I believe we shouldn’t retire because of some arbitrary age, but because we don’t want to do the work anymore. If you love what you do, KEEP DOING IT!

Today, is, “Go live the dream,” day! Stop being afraid to make a change. I sold my home and moved into what is essentially a 2-bedroom apartment and almost EVERYONE thought we were crazy—because it wasn’t their dream, it was ours. I’m happier. I miss my friends and family and I wish they were closer, but the dream for me wasn’t there anymore, it’s here. And you know what? It’s all reversible. Life is short. Time flies. But you are the pilot. Go live the dream!
