Friday’s Quote

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” Ernest Hemingway

Doug and I were listening to Morgan Housel’s podcast yesterday and he really had some thought-provoking questions. He asked, “What if we didn’t compare ourselves to others, but if we actually compared ourselves to the person we could have been?” I liked this, except I think it needs a little twist to get us away from using the past tense. Why don’t we start comparing ourselves to the person we want to become?

Have you asked yourself that recently? Who do you want to become? I don’t think this is or should be some grandiose vision, necessarily, but I do think it should be a vision and version of you that is different—even by just a little bit. The physical you is one small part, but let’s look past that, as well, to the more meaningful parts of you. What are you afraid of? What if you had less fear? Are you really happy? What if you were happier? What are you worrying about? What if that worry went away or lessened?

Another quote Housel shared was from an acquaintance, who said,”Life is long, I hope we stay in touch.” Life is long! Let’s stop saying it’s short. And we deserve to be happy—really happy. Instead of comparing ourselves to the guy next to us, why don’t we make 2024 the year we look at reducing or eliminating altogether one worry and one fear, and raising our happiness—Now that’s a “best version of me” I can wrap my hands around!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
