The Wallpaperer’s Dilemma

Many years ago, when we first moved into our house in Skillman, NJ, we had the two-story family room wallpapered. I remember the day when the gentlemen applying the wallpaper brought in metal parts and started to build the scaffolding. I was amazed as they built the support structure all the way up my back staircase—and that’s when I had the “Aha moment,” and I realized, “So that’s how you get to the top!”

There was no way to reach the top of my two-story family room without some sort of support structure. They would have had to refuse the job if they didn’t know how to reach the top. And I think most of us struggle with this concept in our own lives. We ask ourselves often, “How can I get to the next level?” and “Why am I not there already?” We wrestle with our challenges with thoughts like, “I work hard, so why haven’t I achieved more,” and “I’m a good person, I deserve more.” And my favorite is, “Why is he so successful, he’s an $%^#@$#!” Are you with me?

Here is the truth, and I will share it in wallpaper terms: We can’t get to the top without some sort of help or support. My wallpaper guy figured that out quickly and the sky was then the limit for him. The best part is that we already know what we need to do to get the help we need. Yes, that’s right, we ALREADY KNOW—we just don’t want to admit it. Here is our action step for the day: ask yourself, “What help or support do I need right now that will raise me to the next level?” Come on! We can all get this important answer for ourselves today—and then we must agree to act on it!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!

P.S. From now on, when you see scaffolding I want you to remember that scaffolding is built to take you higher! It might be ugly but it gets the job done!
