A Rugby Lesson

I’m reading a new book, Legacy, about the All Blacks, New Zealand’s national rugby team. I can’t tell you a lot about it because I am all of 9 pages in, but it has already grabbed my attention. Like Bloomberg declared about this book—it is “Unputdownable!” I thought Bloomberg made up the word, but apparently not.

Here is the quote that got me and I hadn’t even gotten to the numbered pages yet: “For Rugby, like business and like much of life, is played primarily in the mind.” I try to profess this every day. If there is just one thing I have learned over the last 10 years of coaching it is exactly that. Forget talent and opportunity for a second, and simply focus on the mind and see what happens!

We want there to be a million reasons why we aren’t reaching the success we want in life, but have we ever asked, “Maybe it’s my mindset that’s holding me back?” Probably not, but imagine if we did? Imagine if we said, “What if it’s been ME all along?” Look, the All Blacks have an all-time winning success rate of almost 80%—imagine what would happen for you and me if our success rate was 80%! Let’s focus on our mindset and see what happens!
