John Legend was named The Sexiest Man Alive this year by People magazine which required John to do nothing but be amazingly handsome. Forbes declared Jeff Bezos the richest man in the world in 2019 and Jeff definitely had to do something to earn that title. But in 1988, Esquire Magazine proclaimed Mr. Rogers an American hero. For that weighty title to be bestowed upon Mr. Rogers, doing wasn’t enough, he had to be a hero.

Can you even imagine someone calling you a hero? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a hero as a person admired for achievements and noble qualities. It is the “and” part of the Merriam Webster definition that separates the masses from ever being defined as a hero. But maybe we are closer than we think to being a true hero.

It’s likely that Esquire Magazine won’t be interviewing either of us any time soon, but what would happen if we decided to be a hero anyway? We have 27 days left in December and 3 weeks left until Christmas—can you be a hero? What would you do differently to be a hero to just one person? Who would benefit the most, you or them? I don’t know but I think we should find out!
