We hate change, and by “we,” I mean, all humans. We love the status quo because it’s simple; we don’t need to think about it, we don’t need to figure it out, we just need to simply rinse and repeat. Very often, even when we KNOW the new way will be better, we still prefer the old way. It makes no sense but it’s true. And the older we get, the more averse we are to change.

Some of the reasons we hate and resist change are: loss of control, fear of the unknown, disruption to our routines and habits, fear of our competence, and overall dread of more work as we try to come up to speed. We can’t imagine what the new way will look like, so we’d rather remain in the old. People perseverate on the bad, and rarely focus on or imagine the possibilities and the good.

Change is an opportunity for us to experience something new and to grow and evolve as a person. When we try to resist change, we rob ourselves of the experiences that can transform our life on both a professional and personal level. In June of 2020, “we’ve always done it this way,” is as obsolete as pay phones and DVD players. Challenge yourself today to pick one thing that needs to be changed, acknowledge and accept your fears, then bravely step forward! Leap into the unknown. This could very likely be the best thing that’s ever happened to you! Be Brave!
