Sisyphus and You!

My extended family went out to dinner on Saturday night to celebrate the birthday of our family’s fabulous matriarch! It was a great night with lots of laughs. While we were enjoying cocktails, I happen to see this sculpture on the bookshelf. I assumed it was from Greek mythology, but I had to look it up to find out the story. As Greek mythology would have it, Zeus condemned Sisyphus to a never-ending punishment of spending eternity wrestling a giant boulder up a steep hill. Good times, eh? And yes, Sisyphus deserved it!

When I first glanced at the sculpture, I thought, “Oh boy, can I relate to this man’s task! Can you relate? Do you ever feel like you’re pushing a boulder up a steep hill—endlessly? Let’s put our finger on it right now. Say it out loud. Define your boulder.

Unlike Sisyphus, ours is not mythology. But also unlike Sisyphus, we aren’t going to do this for eternity. So ask yourself, “If I could make it better, how would I do that?” Let’s give ourselves 5 full minutes of thinking time and come up with all the ways we can improve this situation. And look, for many, it’s not going away soon but there is always a way to make it better—ALWAYS! And unlike Sisyphus, there’s always an opportunity for us to take a break—even though the boulder will still be there when we get back. It’s time to give this a little thought. Find the respite. I know it’s there somewhere for all of us.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
