If We Could All Be Nicer

I did a pre-recorded Peloton ride yesterday with Leanne Hainsby. If you’re unfamiliar with Leanne, she’s a British instructor who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, and riding with her is like riding with a ray of sunshine, especially now.

During the ride yesterday, she said something really powerful. She said, “If we could all be as nice to each other as you have been to me (during this challenging time), the world would be such a better place.” Wow! It’s true, right. When we hear someone has cancer, do we hold onto our angry, judgemental, snarky attitude toward them, or do we soften completely and come from a place of compassion and love? And why did we need to hear “cancer” before we could come to that new place? It’s clearly possible—so can we do it without a cancer diagnosis?

Let’s look around ourselves right now. To whom are we not being kind? Name them right now to yourself. What if you found out they had cancer? How would you (and I) behave differently? How would we treat them now that we know? Some will argue, “That changes things,” but I’m suggesting we can change things without cancer. We can be nice without a diagnosis. We can take the higher road because the higher road is a choice and because, like Hainsby said, “The world would be such a better place.” It’s a choice.

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
