Yes or No?

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending AdvisorHub’s Women’s Work/Life Summit at the historic and beautiful University Club of New York. It was an amazing event that showcased many amazing and incredibly successful women and how they managed to do it all. I was humbled by all, but especially those who rose through the ranks to where they are today as single moms—my respect for what they have accomplished has no words.

One of the topics that came up was, “How do I say, ‘No?'” And then the natural follow up question, “And what do I say, ‘Yes,’ to?” Both are great questions, but there is a third option which makes saying, “Yes” or “No” a whole lot easier and that’s, “Let me think about it.” It’s a beautiful placeholder that allows you time to think or muster up the courage to say, “Unfortunately, I’m going to have to say no.”

As for the, “And what do I say, ‘Yes,’ to?” question, here’s a tip that might help. While you are thinking about it, ask yourself a few questions: What makes this “yes” important to me? Will this “yes,” bring me joy and fill my tank OR will this “yes” deplete and exhaust me?  Or, is this a people pleasing move so someone will like me? Finally, remember that every “yes” is a “no” to something else. What are you giving up to make this “yes” work for you? As long as you’re honest with yourself, you will make the right choice for you.
