Measuring Joy

I was on the Peloton the other day and the instructor, Hannah Corbin, asked a question near the end of the ride: “What do you love?” and then she almost immediately asked, “And how long did it take for you to say yourself?” My immediate response was, ‘I didn’t even think of me,’ but it might have been the way the question was worded. Regardless, it was a good wake up call. Putting ourselves on the list of people we love is really important.

Corbin went on to ask what she thought was a much easier question which was, “What things do you love to do?” Much easier question, right? She said, “Make a list and then see how many of them you are actually doing!” OK, now that’s a list I’m interested in writing.

‘What I love,’ is easy to answer; ‘Am I doing it,’ is a whole different question altogether. “Am I doing it?” calls us out—it asks us if we are actually living this life or going through the motions. Are you having fun? Are you making friends a priority? Are you taking care of yourself? Is your life meaningful? Are you taking risks? Are you pursing your passion? Is work all-encompassing? On a scale of 1-10, where is your measure of joyfulness? Are you happy? Hannah Corbin, thanks for asking the question, it was a good one. Anyone looking to reset?
