Unbridled Joy

Last night Doug and I attended a concert at Lincoln Center. It was the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and it was incredible. It was a concert with soulful big band versions of classic holiday tunes. If you want to get in the holiday spirit, go see this! It was so much fun.

What I noticed last night with all 15 band members was the same thing I wrote about years ago when we saw Chris Botti at Blue Note Jazz Club, New York—unbridled joy! I hope that for all of you this is the way you feel going to work. I hope you’re excited to go. I hope you’re happy when you get there. And I hope you love your job and the people. Choosing a career in music will not produce the highest paying job, but what’s the cost of happiness?

I’m not suggesting any of us quit our job and pick up the trombone, but I think we should ask ourselves periodically, “How happy am I?” Rate it on a scale of 1-10. I don’t know what would be acceptable for you, but anything below 7 is really going to require me to rethink about what I am doing. And I know there are bad days, even bad weeks, but this is an overall question. If you’re not happy most of the time, some changes need to be made, don’t you think?

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
