What Do I Want?

I was on a call recently with a prospective client who was referred to me. She is in transition after a downsizing and landing the next job in this market has proved a little challenging. She’s been in the industry for close to 30 years, she’s incredibly accomplished, and she’s got all the “medals” to prove it.

Periodically, I get clients like this and the same thing is true about each one—they are lost and confused about what they want in their next job. I hear a lot of, “I’m not sure what I want.” I actually love when I hear that because most people have never sat down and literally wrote out what they want in a job—even if they currently have a job. It might actually be even more important if you already have a job! No one can get what they want if they don’t know what that is, right?

Whether you are employed or in transition, I strongly recommend spending time to WRITE DOWN exactly what the dream job is for you. Start with what you don’t like, that’s the easy part. Then, really dive into what you do want. Converting your thoughts to actual words on paper is the game-changer. What you might find is complete clarity of what you’re looking for, and then it’s a lot easier to ask for it. The person who knows these answers not only gains clarity, but also confidence. You can’t get what you want if you don’t know what that is. Tweet that!
