A Psychology Experiment

Yesterday, I helped my daughter sell cookies at her university for THON. THON is a student-run philanthropy that raises funds for local children’s hospitals. Penn State is the university that is most famous for THON, although many colleges have their own version. The cause is amazing and the universities usually do fun things to rally the student body around these fundraising efforts.

But yesterday was like a psychology experiment. It was so interesting to see the lengths to which people would go so they did NOT have to make eye contact with us—almost walking into walls! They “hid” behind their AirPods or Beats. I tried not to judge, but it was absolutely hilarious to watch. And we weren’t all that intimidating—three females behind a table selling a $3 cookie. It really got me thinking.

We avoid things that are uncomfortable, which makes them arguably MORE uncomfortable. The people who handled it head-on were great! They responded with comments like, “I’m vegan,” “I’m headed to the gym, but thanks,” and “I’m broke!” All great answers, right! And then the uncomfortable moment is no longer uncomfortable. Please take a look at something you’re avoiding right now. I know you’re afraid to speak your truth, but in speaking your truth, it’s over! Everyone can move on. Not saying anything makes it linger and things get awkward. Today is a “rip the bandaid off” kind of day. It’s a “speak your truth” day. It’s an “I’m broke” day! Be brave. Freedom awaits!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
