Fear Of Heights

Yesterday was a really good day—one might even describe it as epic. Two of my girlfriends and I climbed to the highest point in the Statue of Liberty that one can climb to, the crown. As with anything like this, we weren’t sure what to expect. The website emphasized that you must be in good shape and you must not be afraid of enclosed, tight spaces, which created a little trepidation in all of us, but we made the plans anyway. (Important step – make the plans).

The day finally arrived yesterday and we were so excited! It was much colder and windier than we had anticipated and I wasn’t properly dressed (I wish I had taken a picture of me with two mis-matched left handed gloves and a scarf wrapped around my head like a babushka—LOL). We hadn’t anticipated all the people from every country who were having their picture taken with Lady Liberty—she clearly meant something very powerful to them. And we hadn’t anticipated what the ascent up to the crown would look and feel like—we thought it would be much worse then what we experienced. Even the actual crown was not what we thought, it is a very tiny space!

I’m always encouraging us to do hard things. Fear of heights used to be my thing, but I keep attacking them, and now they don’t bother me nearly as much. I actually had no fear yesterday, which is rather incredible for me. But the thing I notice most often when I face my fears is that it’s never what I thought it would be in my mind, my mind always creates something far worse than reality. I’m going to face more fears, because it’s opening up the world to me. I no longer say, “I can’t, I’m afraid of heights.” Are you willing to face some of your fears? Maybe you recall my post from 2017 when I was in Paris and I cried on my walk to the Eiffel Tower because I was terrified of going up. We can all face our fears. Start with little fears, but start. Exercise that muscle and I promise you won’t regret it. Fear is holding us back! So what should I do next—fly in a helicopter around NYC or climb to the top of the Washington Monument? I’m definitely very afraid of both!

Let’s GO! WE GOT THIS!
